2011 Q1 Level Crossing Risk
#1
Attached is a file containing the combined offerings of the participants at the recent Mod1/Mod7 Exam Workshop who attempted this question.

In general the answers did not concentrate sufficiently on the question actually asked; indeed many did not answer in a "module 1" manner in that they did not focus on the HAZARDS and RISKS to SAFETY.

Several also demonstrated a lack of solid knowledge regarding the various level crossing types and included inaccuracy and some confusion. It may be helpful to refer to the presentation available to download from http://db.tt/S1OMXQ4B

Some stated "assumptions" which were:
a) implicit within their earlier description of the type of crossing they had already defined (and so superfluous), or
b) related to the hazards being discussed (obviously to take to an extreme case if one assumed that all equipment was provided and maintained perfectly and all users also fully complied with everything they supposed to and nothing untoward ever happened then there isn't much risk with any form of crossing!).
Generally "assumptions" should be stated to clarify the examiner's understanding of the candidate's interpretation of the question being asked- for example whether the crossing is over a single track or double track line, a full barrier crossing has 2 booms or 4 etc. where such is being used as the basis of the answer given.

Note that this is one of the questions considered in the official IRSE "Sample Answers"

The attached may also prove useful for containing some ideas that might contribute to an answer
